Transport to and from the airports

There there are a number of airports close to Oxford that have good transport links.

Heathrow airport: Heathrow is the most convenient airport to get to and from Oxford. The Airline bus company has a direct service between Oxford and Heathrow airport which takes around 1 hour depending on traffic. Buses depart from the Heathrow central bus station (Terminals 1-3) and from directly outside Terminal 5. They run every 30 minutes during the hours of 4am and 10pm with a more infrequent service running outside these times. The first/final stop at Oxford is Gloucester Green which is a 10 minute walk to the conference. Tickets can be booked in advance via the website or bought from the driver on the day (usually £30 return). Please note that if buying the ticket on the day, payment has to be in cash or via contactless credit/debit card.

Birmingham airport: Birmingham International Airport is also a convenient option. There is a regular direct train service between the airport and Oxford train station. Journey time is 1 hour. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Cross Country Trains or bought on the day.

Gatwick airport: Gatwick is not as close to Oxford as Heathrow or Birmingham is but may also be an option. The Airline bus company has a service between Gatwick airport and Oxford. Journey time is around 2 hours depending on traffic. Buses depart every hour during the hours of 7am and 10pm with a more infrequent service running outside of these hours. The first/final stop at Oxford is Gloucester Green which is a 10-minute walk to the conference. Tickets can be booked in advance via the website or bought from the driver on the day. Please note that if buying the ticket on the day, payment has to be in cash or via contactless credit/debit card.

Transport to and from the train station

If coming from London, there is a choice of 2 regular services that depart from different train stations in London. Great Western Railway run a regular service between London Paddington and Oxford. Journey time is around 1 hour. Chiltern Railways run a service between London Marylebone station and Oxford. Journey time is usually slightly longer (around 1 hour and 10 minutes) but the trains are more modern and comfortable with good WIFI connection. Tickets for either service can be booked in advance (which is usually cheaper) or on the day itself from the station. They are available either on the rail company websites or via www.thetrainline.com

Oxford train station is close to the center of Oxford and a 15 minute walk to the Symposium venue. There is a taxi rank outside the train station.

Eurostar

If arriving into London from Paris via the Eurostar, the most convenient route to Oxford is to walk get the Underground from Kings Cross St Pancras (Circle or the Hammersmith and City Line) to Marylebone or Paddington station from where you can get the train to Oxford. Alternatively, one can take the Underground to Marble Arch station where there are 2 direct bus services: the X90 and the Oxford Tube. Tickets cost approximately £20 return and can be purchased on the bus. The service runs every 10-15 minutes throughout the day with less frequent late-night services.
